Staff mobility for Teaching and Training Purposes
To strengthen international cooperation between higher education institutions, the European Commission supports visiting lecturers from Erasmus+ partner countries for both teaching and training at THWS through the “Erasmus+ Staff Mobility” programme line.
Staff mobility can take place both at THWS (incoming) and vice versa at Erasmus+ partner higher education institutions as staff mobility (outgoing).
Visiting staff from THWS’ European partner higher education institutions in Erasmus+ programme countries can apply for Erasmus+ funding at the home higher education institution (sending institution). The THWS International Office will be happy to assist you with general preparation and, if required, will prepare an invitation letter before and a confirmation of stay after your Erasmus+ mobility.
Within the framework of bilateral cooperation agreements with non-European partner higher education institutions, staff stays at THWS are eligible for funding through the Erasmus+ mobility programme for teaching and training purposes in partner countries.
Requirements
- Existence of an Inter-Institutional Agreement (IIA)
Partner countries, partner higher education institutions, faculties
Please see overview at https://international.fhws.de/fhws-international/projekte-und-kooperationen/erasmus at Erasmus+ partner higher education institutions in NON-EU countries - Length of teaching stay between 5 days and 60 days (excluding travel days) at one of the participating THWS partner higher education institutions in Erasmus+ partner countries
- Actual stay at THWS
- Contact for possible Erasmus+ funding at least 3 months before the stay if possible (note visa application times)
- Application for an Erasmus+ grant at least 4 weeks before the start of the stay abroad
- Participation in conferences and congresses, research projects directly related to research, and “pure” partner visits are not eligible for funding
- Parallel funding from other EU programmes is excluded
- No insurance cover is associated with an Erasmus+ mobility grant. Participants are responsible for organising the necessary insurance cover (international health insurance; liability and accident insurance, if applicable) themselves. In addition to the above-mentioned insurances, insurance against loss or theft of documents, tickets and luggage is recommended.
Financial support and German tax ID
The amount of financial support depends on the travel distance and the length of stay possible within the Erasmus+ KA 171 budget.
The minimum period of stay for staff mobility at THWS is 5 days. The maximum period of stay that can be funded depends on the joint Erasmus+ KA 171 budget of THWS and the partner higher education institution in the partner country.
- Day 1-14: Individual support of EUR 160 per day (full daily rate)
- Day 15-60: Individual support of EUR 112 per day (70% of the full daily rate)
- Special needs support for participants with limitations or disabilities is also available.
A German tax ID is required for payment of the Erasmus+ grant since 2024. This applies to all persons who receive payments of more than EUR 1.500 from THWS in the course of a calendar year. This also applies if several payments of less than EUR 1.500 are made if the total of the payments over the calendar year is EUR 1.500 or more.
The German tax ID must be applied for from the responsible tax office at the place of stay in Germany for persons who do not have a permanent residence in Germany. Once issued, the personal number is valid for life and can be used for further stays in Germany, regardless of the place of stay.
All mobility participants will receive information and the application form for the tax ID from THWS during the preparation for their stay. The German tax ID must be communicated to the International Office, otherwise the financial support cannot be paid out.
The Erasmus+ grant is paid out in the form of a bank transfer (no cash payment possible) after arrival at THWS. We recommend using an account at an online bank or a bank in the SEPA area (e.g. an intermediary bank) to avoid complications with the transfer.

Teaching in NON-EU countries: Erasmus+ Staff Mobility in STA countries
Erasmus+ Staff Mobility for Teaching (STA)
Target group
- Lecturers who have a contractual relationship with the sending THWS partner higher education institutions in Erasmus+ partner countries
- Non-endowed lecturers
- Sessional lecturers
- Emeritus professors and retired lecturers
- Research associates (or trainees for STT)
- Company personnel
The aims of an Erasmus+ short-term visiting lectureship are the internationalisation of studies and teaching at THWS and the host higher education institution as well as the strengthening of inter-institutional partnerships and networks. The exchange of expertise at international level strengthens the European dimension of the host higher education institution and enriches the teaching it offers. Thanks to this addition, visiting lecturers impart their expertise to students who do not want to or cannot study abroad.
The development of joint study programmes plays just as important a role as sharing teaching content and new innovative teaching methods.
The following teaching formats are eligible for funding
- Seminars
- Lectures
- Talks
- Tutorials
- Supervision of doctoral students
- Participation in doctoral viva etc.
A lectureship eligible for funding
- Must comprise at least 8 hours of teaching for the first week of the stay or a shorter stay. The minimum number of hours will be calculated pro rata for each additional day of stay beyond one week (7 days).
- Must be fully integrated into the regular teaching programme at THWS.
- Is halved when STA is combined with STT mobility.
STA combined with STT
Erasmus+ staff mobility for teaching purposes can be combined with training purposes (STA&STT). In this case, the teaching load is reduced to 4 hours per week of the stay.
Training in NON-EU countries: Erasmus+ Staff Mobility STT (incoming)
Erasmus+ Staff Mobility for Training (STT)
Target group
- Non-academic and academic staff as well as lecturers of sending THWS partner higher education institutions in Erasmus+ partner countries
The aim is to strengthen the professional and personal development of non-academic and academic higher education staff at international level. International networks are to be expanded and broadened through the willingness to receive and supervise return visits by higher education employees.
The following training formats are eligible for funding
- Job shadowing
- Sitting in on classes
- Participating in workshops, seminars, language courses and International Staff Weeks
Funding can generally always be granted if the programme requirements have been met and sufficient funds are available.
Steps before, during and after staff mobility from Erasmus+ partner countries to THWS
- Find the right Erasmus+ funding opportunity for your stay at THWS:
Please consult your contact person at the receiving THWS faculty/institution about the possibilities of mobility at THWS within the framework of the Erasmus+ programme. They will contact the THWS International Office to discuss the funding possibilities for mobility.
The amount of financial support depends on the travel distance and the length of stay possible within the Erasmus+ KA 171 budgets as described above.
Erasmus+ options:- Erasmus+ Staff Mobility for Training (STT)
- Erasmus+ Staff Mobility for Teaching (STA) / 8 hours teaching load per week of stay
- Erasmus+ Staff Mobility for Teaching combined with Training (STA&STT) /4 hours teaching load per week of stay
- Letter of invitation and visa:
As soon as the mobility period and grant have been determined, the contact person at the receiving faculty/institution within THWS applies to the International Office for a letter of invitation for the guest’s visa process. You can support this process by filling out and sending the invitation form linked here to the contact person at the receiving faculty/institution within THWS.
The invitation letter will then be sent to you by e-mail as well as by post. - Erasmus+ Mobility Agreement:
While you are waiting for the visa, please already agree on the contents of the Erasmus+ Mobility Agreement with your contact person at the receiving faculty/institution within THWS. The Mobility Agreement must be completed and signed by you, the Erasmus+ contact person at your home higher education institution and your contact person at the receiving faculty/institution within THWS. Please select the Mobility Agreement that suits your mobility:
Erasmus+ Mobility Agreement for Staff Mobility for Training (STT)
Erasmus+ Mobility Agreement for Staff Mobility for Teaching (STA)
Erasmus+ Mobility Agreement for Staff Mobility for Teaching combined with Training (STA&STT) - If necessary: Apply for a German tax ID
This step is necessary if you do not yet have a German tax ID. This is mandatory so that THWS can make the payment of the Erasmus+ grant (see Financial support and German tax ID).
If you already have a German tax ID from a previous stay in Germany (not necessarily at THWS), this step is not necessary, as the German tax ID is valid for life and does not have to be reapplied for each stay. Please enter your tax ID in the corresponding field during the application via MoveON (step 5).
If you do not yet have a German tax ID, please contact the International Office at THWS (barbara.mueller-scheuring[at]thws.de) so that the application for the tax ID can be submitted jointly to the responsible tax office. It can take up to 4 weeks for the tax office to issue the tax ID, so we recommend that you apply early, but no later than 4 weeks before the start of your mobility, otherwise the payment date will be delayed. - Application through MoveON
As soon as you have received your visa but no later than 4 weeks before the start of your mobility, apply to the THWS International Office through the MoveOn portal including your fully signed Mobility Agreement:
MoveON application form for Incoming Staff Mobility
- Erasmus+ grant agreement, payment of mobility grant, confirmation of stay, EU survey
Once we have received your complete application through the MoveON portal, we will prepare the Erasmus+ grant agreement, which defines your rights and obligations regarding the Erasmus+ funding and the details of your Erasmus+ mobility.
We will send you the grant agreement in advance by e-mail and need a scan of the signed document back from you. Upon arrival, you confirm the signature in duplicate in the original.
The mobility grant will be paid out by bank transfer after your arrival, as stipulated in the grant agreement.
Before your departure, you will receive a confirmation of stay from the THWS International Office about the length of your Erasmus+ mobility stay.
All participants in the Erasmus+ programme are obliged to take part in the European Commission’s EU survey using the Beneficiary Module (BM) to evaluate stays abroad. At the end of your stay abroad, you will therefore receive an e-mail containing the link and the request to take part in the online survey within the next 30 days.
