Visa and Health Certificate
Within the EU, German citizens can travel with their identity card without any problems. However, if you want to study or work as an intern outside the EU, or if you are a national of a country that is not part of the European Union, you may need different documents to enter the country of destination. Please note that depending on the country of destination, you may need a valid passport in addition to your identity card. You can apply for this at the municipal administration office in your place of residence. Your passport may also be required to still be valid for a specific period of time to obtain a visa and enter the country of destination. You should therefore also find out about a possible extension to your passport documents in good time before departure.

Visa
Please find out in good time whether you need a visa for your stay abroad. For more information, please contact the diplomatic mission for your country of destination in Germany, which can be found on the list of diplomatic missions for other countries in Germany on the Foreign Office’s pages. Pay attention to the status with which you want to enter the country. A distinction is often made between students and interns. Visa fees vary from country to country, but some of them can run into costs in triple figures.
Health certificate
You may only enter some countries (e.g. PR China, Japan, USA, Malaysia) for a longer stay with a current health certificate. For the required forms, please contact the diplomatic mission for your country of destination in Germany, which can be found on the list of diplomatic missions for other countries in Germany on the Foreign Office’s pages. The issuing of a health certificate is often associated with having sometimes complex tests and vaccinations done, which can result in considerable costs for you. In addition, this can be a lengthy process, so you should make sure that the health certificate is issued in good time.
