Insurance

Please inform yourself comprehensively on the subject of insurance cover abroad. You will find some useful information summarised in our insurance declaration for stays abroad for study and internship purposes.

International health insurance (mandatory for studies and internships abroad)

In general, students at FHWS are required to have international health insurance when studying or completing an internship abroad.
Coverage through the European Health Insurance Card or private insurance is not always sufficient, especially in cases of necessary repatriation, special medical interventions or with regard to pandemic-related circumstances. For example, you can make use of the insurance offered by the DAAD.
In the case of an Erasmus+ grant for studying abroad, please also note that international health insurance including the above-mentioned topics (repatriation, medical interventions and pandemic protection) is obligatory. Please also note the compulsory liability and accident insurance for Erasmus+ internships.

Liability insurance (highly recommended for internships abroad)

(including for damage caused by students in the workplace): Liability insurance covers damage caused by you during your stay abroad. In some countries there are different models of liability insurance. You may expose yourself to the risk of not being adequately insured. Your placement provider will indicate in the Learning Agreement (for Erasmus+ SMI only) whether they have appropriate insurance cover for you.

In countries where national regulations do not make this compulsory, your internship employer can of course not be forced to take out such insurance. In this case, you must ensure sufficient insurance cover yourself. You upload the corresponding proof (incl. insurance number) of this in the MoveOn portal when you apply.

Accident insurance (mandatory for internships abroad)

(among other things, for accidents involving students at the workplace): Accident insurance covers damage you suffer as a result of an accident at work. In many countries, employees are insured by the employer in the event of accidents at work. The extent to which this insurance cover also applies to students on internships can vary from country to country. Your placement provider will indicate in the Learning Agreement (for Erasmus+ SMI only) whether they have appropriate insurance cover for you. As already described in the section on liability insurance, you must ensure that you have sufficient insurance cover if you wish to complete your internship in a country where accident insurance is not compulsory. You upload the corresponding proof (incl. insurance number) of this in the MoveOn portal when you apply.
