Bachelor's degree programme Applied Mathematics (B.Sc.)
Mathematics combined with business and engineering
Are you passionate about mathematics, yet want to place your focus on its applications? Applied mathematics is a key discipline for solving real-world problems from practically all areas of our highly technological and specialised society: The wide range includes technical questions from engineering as well as problems from business administration like simulation and optimisation of production plants, and financial market analysis. Applied mathematics is characterised by the combination of mathematical models and modern computer-assisted methods, in particular from the areas of machine learning and data science. This combination allows for the solution of increasingly complex problems.
The bachelor's degree programme Applied Mathematics is offered as a TWIN programme. This means that it can be studied in German and English. Students can choose modules from the German- or English-taught programme and thus obtain a TWIN certificate.

Reasons to study Applied Mathematics at THWS
Studying at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt opens up doors to a world of innovations and technical challenges. We connect important theory with the required practice, fundamental research with applied engineering, and regional expertise with global perspective. At THWS, you learn to gain new perspectives and contribute to a more sustainable and technologically advanced future. During your studies you can attain to additional qualifications (e.g. trainer certificate (Ausbilderschein), language courses).
Advantages of the degree programme:
- The programme comprises modules from mathematics and computer sciences. You thus develop broad knowledge in these two areas
- Particularly high practice-orientation due to application focus (business and engineering), internship semester, and bachelor's thesis in a company
- Special emphasis is placed on soft skills like communication and presentation skills
- Studies in small groups with direct and close contact to the lecturers
- The TWIN programme enables bilingual studies
- Diverse attractive career perspectives after graduation
- Consecutive master's degree programmes at THWS
Three good reasons
Study contents
The seven-semester programme is divided in about 60 percent mathematics, 20 percent computer science, and 20 percent of the application focus (business and engineering). You already choose one of the two application focuses at the beginning of your studies.
Programme structure
Foundation phase
In the first semesters, you will concentrate on fundamental mathematical subjects such as calculus and linear algebra, followed by the core areas of applied mathematics. You will also learn algorithmic problem solving, structuring information, programming, and the use of specialised mathematical software as part of the computer science curriculum.
Application focuses business/engineering
Right from the start of your studies, you will choose an application focus in business or engineering as your specialisation. This allows you to specialise during your studies and pave the way for your future career. In the engineering specialisation, you will study physics and selected engineering subjects such as technical mechanics. In the business specialisation, you will develop knowledge and skills in areas such as corporate management, accounting, process modelling, and business analytics.
Internship semester (6th semester)
The 6th semester is intended as the internship semester. You spend the semester in a company and have the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills you have developed and get to know the day-to-day work.
Final semester (7th semester)
The bachelor's degree programme concludes with the writing and defence of a bachelor's thesis, in which you can work on a practice-oriented problem in a company and can put your knowledge and skills into practice. After completing your studies, you will have in-depth specialist knowledge and the necessary practical experience as well as the corresponding specialisation to work in a company.
General and core electives (AWPM/FWPM)
At the start of your studies of Applied Mathematics, you choose either Technology or Business as your area of specialisation. That way, you can already move towards your desired career during your studies. The area of specialisation Technology includes Physics, and engineering subjects like Technical Mechanics. In the area of specialisation Business, you will be concerned with Corporate Management, Process Modelling, and Business Analytics.
In addition to the specialisations in Technology or Business, you can choose your individual specialisations through our core elective modules (FWPMs).
Students can also choose from our general elective modules (AWPM). These enable you to specialise further.
Practice-orientation
Studies at THWS are characterised by a high degree of practice-orientation and the internship semester. Depending on the chosen degree programme, the internship semester is scheduled for the 5th or 6th semester. The internship semester offers you the chance to complete an internship with a company of your choice and gain insights into the professional world. That way you can apply the theoretical and practical knowledge developed during your studies in the work environment you are most interested in.
Why are studies at THWS particularly practice-oriented?
- Exercise courses and practice projects
- Getting to know and applying new technologies
- Internship semester as an integral part of studies
- Professors with extensive experience in the industry and economy
- Cooperation with companies and industry partners, also internationally
- Possibility of completing your final thesis in cooperation with a company
International practice
By the way: You also have the opportunity to complete your internship semester abroad. That way, you do not only develop intercultural competence but also boost your language skills and your career perspectives on the international job market.

Career and perspectives
As a graduate of Applied Mathematics you may choose from numerous options:
- Software and technology companies
- Research and development
- Finance and insurance
- Data analysis and processing
- Consulting
The degree Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) also qualifies you for a consecutive master's degree programme in related fields. At THWS you can continue with the master's degree programme Applied Mathematics and Physics or the master's degree programme Artificial Intelligence.
Gaining international experience
THWS places a strong focus on internationality. Our TWIN programmes, i.e. degree programmes identical in content that are offered in German and English, are unique throughout Germany. We thus promote your international and intercultural experiences and optimally prepare you for a globalised job market.
