Study contents

The seven-semester programme is divided into a foundation phase and the subsequent specialist studies. In the foundation phase you will develop fundamental knowledge in technology and science, and design basics. The specialist studies serve to deepen and apply the knowledge developed in the first two semesters. You will develop the theoretical knowledge in lectures and exercises, which is then applied in lab courses in the THWS labs. The programme comprises a mandatory 12-week pre-study internship and an internship semester in the 5th semester of study.

1: Foundation phase (1st and 2nd semester)

In the foundation phase (1st and 2nd semester), you develop the necessary fundamental visualisation and technical-scientific skills. These abilities and knowledge form the basis for the subsequent main studies.

2: Main studies (3rd to 7th semester)

In the main studies from the 3rd semester onwards, you deepen and apply your knowledge in specific areas of civil engineering. The main studies focus on building expert knowledge, gaining practical experience during the internship in the 5th semester, and project work. During this phase, you also develop key skills like project management and development.

3: Internship semester (5th semester)

The internship is scheduled for the 5th semester. The full-time internship can be completed in a civil engineering firm in the region or abroad. Thanks to our close cooperation with the local and national industry and the great number of partner universities abroad, you have a wide variety to choose from.

4: Final semester (7th semester)

The bachelor’s programme concludes with a bachelor’s thesis, in which you work on a practice-oriented problem and put your knowledge and skills into practice. After completing your studies, you will have in-depth specialist knowledge and the necessary practical experience as well specialisation to start a successful career.

In the higher semesters of the bachelor's programme Civil Engineering - Digital Design and Construction you choose construction subjects according to your interests. You may choose construction subjects like solid construction, steel engineering, wood construction, and geo technology, between construction management subjects, or hydraulic engineering, or infrastructure. You could also choose a combination according to your interests developed during the first five semesters.

Students can also choose from our general elective modules (AWPM). These enable you to specialise further.

Practice-orientation

Studies at THWS are characterised by a high degree of practice-orientation and the internship semester. Depending on the chosen degree programme, the internship semester is scheduled for the 5th or 6th semester. The internship semester offers you the chance to complete an internship with a company of your choice and gain insights into the professional world. That way you can apply the theoretical and practical knowledge developed during your studies in the work environment you are most interested in.

  • Exercise courses and practice projects
  • Getting to know and applying new technologies
  • Internship semester as an integral part of studies
  • Professors with extensive experience in the industry and economy
  • Cooperation with companies and industry partners, also internationally
  • Possibility of completing your final thesis in cooperation with a company

By the way: You also have the opportunity to complete your internship semester abroad. That way, you do not only develop intercultural competence but also boost your language skills and your career perspectives on the international job market.

Looking for more practice?
