Study contents

The 7-semester programme consists of basic studies, main studies, specialisation studies, and an internship semester. It is completed by a bachelor's thesis. The THWS bachelor's degree programme Geovisualisation is directed towards training experts who are able to effectively visualise and analyse geodata. You benefit from an extensive and practice-oriented education that prepares you for multiple careers in different fields.

1: Foundation phase (1st to 2nd semester)

The basic studies start with an introduction to geovisualisation. You develop the basics of geographic information systems (GIS), cartography, and data collection. This knowledge is complemented by foundation modules in mathematics and design, and introductory courses in computer science and computer-aided design software (CAD). In this phase, you develop a broad knowledge base upon which you can build in higher semesters. The courses aim for you to develop a deep understanding of the technical and design aspects of geovisualisation.

2: Main studies (3rd to 4th semester):

In the main studies, you deepen your skills in applying more advanced technologies and methods. These include web technologies, application development, advanced 3D GIS technologies, and photography. You also learn more about databases and the administration and analysis of large datasets. The main objective of this phase is to prepare you to apply modern technologies to solve real-life problems. The focus is placed on the integration of theory and practice through project-based learning, which is essential for your future career.

3: Internship semester (5th semester)

The internship semester takes place in the 5th semester and is spent in a company or an organisation in Germany or abroad. You gain practical experience in applying your knowledge. That way, you get to know the professional world and put your theoretical knowledge into practice. You also grow your professional network and facilitate your personal development.

4: Specialisation studies (6th semester)

In the last semesters, you choose specialisation modules that align with your personal and professional interests. The modules include remote sensing, 4D GIS, academic work, open-source GIS, and mobile data collection.

5: Project and bachelor's thesis (7th semester)

In order to complete your studies, you carry out an extensive project and write a bachelor's thesis, that is focused on a specific topic of geovisualisation. This final phase enables you to apply your knowledge and skills in a project of your choice and put academic research methods into practice.

Different specialisations are offered for the bachelor's degree programme Geovisualisation. This offers you the opportunity to choose an individual focus area and embark on your future career path already during your studies. From the 3rd semester, you can choose from the following modules:

  • Geo Information Systems
  • Cartography
  • 3D Visualisation
  • Virtual and Augmented Reality

Students can also choose from our general elective modules (AWPM). These enable you to specialise further.

Practice-orientation

Studies at THWS are characterised by a high degree of practice-orientation and the internship semester. Depending on the chosen degree programme, the internship semester is scheduled for the 5th or 6th semester. The internship semester offers you the chance to complete an internship with a company of your choice and gain insights into the professional world. That way you can apply the theoretical and practical knowledge developed during your studies in the work environment you are most interested in.

  • Exercise courses and practice projects
  • Getting to know and applying new technologies
  • Internship semester as an integral part of studies
  • Professors with extensive experience in the industry and economy
  • Cooperation with companies and industry partners, also internationally
  • Possibility of completing your final thesis in cooperation with a company

By the way: You also have the opportunity to complete your internship semester abroad. That way, you do not only develop intercultural competence but also boost your language skills and your career perspectives on the international job market.
