Become an expert of international social work

The master's programme International Social Work with Refugees and Migrants is an application-oriented and, in terms of content and exchange, internationally oriented English-language degree programme. The programme provides professional, social and profession-related competences for the field of action of social work with migrants and refugees in the international and national context.

Based on empirical findings and theoretical references, you are qualified in intercultural, legal, educational and psychological terms to develop and implement solution-oriented courses of action for the special situation of refugees and migrants. You will be enabled to operate in the area of policies of local as well as international actors. The professional grasp of social work in the context of migration will thus be further developed.

English-taught degree programme

Course of studies

The programme consists of six areas of study which will turn your focus to the international level of social work, sensitise them for the work with refugees and migrants, and and skills them practice-oriented methodological and decision-making competences. The international orientation of the programme is particularly reinforced by Area of Study V, "Exploring the Field". During your studies, you will have the opportunity to spend a semester abroad, preferably in a region of origin or transit, and to complete internships there.

Career and perspectives

With your master's degree in International Social Work with Refugees and Migrants, you will be able to work professionally at the national level (e.g. in migration counselling, youth welfare with unaccompanied minor refugees, volunteer management) and take on management tasks. Moreover, you will be able to work skilfully and competently in an international environment (e.g. supervision of UNHCR refugee camps, EU Asylum Hotspot Centres or other internationally operating organisations). The steadily growing demand for skilled specialists due to the world-wide increasing migration results in very good job prospects.

Admission requirements

In order to study International Social Work with Refugees and Migrants, you must hold a bachelor's degree with a grade of 2.5 or better, or a comparable degree. To apply for this programme, you will additionally need to submit the application form available from the website of the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences.
