Workshop content:

The workshop supports THWS staff in strengthening cooperation with African partner universities by reflecting on practical experiences from past mobilities and collaborations. The focus lies on intercultural dynamics in administration, teaching, communication, and expectations that influence everyday cooperation. Rather than a theoretical training, the session functions as a shared learning space where partners jointly identify challenges and successful strategies for smoother collaboration.

Learning goals

Participants will:

  • understand how cultural frameworks shape cooperation in higher education
  • recognize typical misunderstandings in mobility organization and teaching
  • reflect on expectations regarding hierarchy, communication, planning, and responsibility
  • gain practical recommendations for future exchanges and joint projects

Structure

  1. Introduction (10 min) Tanja Kleibl
Short framing input on intercultural cooperation in university partnerships and why mobility situations intensify cultural differences.
  2. Partner reflections (45–60 min)
Uganda, Mozambique and Nigeria country team presents a 15–20 minute reflection on experiences with THWS collaboration, guided by key questions:
  • communication styles and response expectations
  • planning, deadlines, and time perception
  • administrative procedures and flexibility
  • teaching and supervision expectations
  • hierarchy and decision-making
  • recurring misunderstandings and good practices
  1. Dialogue & Q&A (20–25 min)
Moderated exchange with THWS participants to clarify expectations and collect practical solutions for future cooperation.

Outcome

The workshop results in a shared understanding of collaboration practices, a list of potential intercultural challenge areas, and some recommendations for teaching, administration and mobility organization.
The overall goal is to foster sustainable, respectful, and efficient partnerships through mutual reflection rather than one-sided cultural explanation.

The Erasmus Staff Exchange is to encourage employees to visit a partner university for a period of at least 5 days where they apply their newly developed theoretical knowledge into practice. The experiences gained by this prepare THWS to continuously take on the challenges accompanying internationalisation with success.

Your stay abroad can be financially subsidised as part of the already established international staff mobility. The application and the procedure are subject to current regulations of the THWS International Office (HSIN) For further information, please visit the websites on staff mobility.

You would like to participate in the Intercultural Certificate+ but cannot go abroad?

Should you not be able to participate in the Erasmus Staff Exchange, you can alternatively participate in an English advanced regional training.

Every semester, one to two English webinars are offered on relevant topics by THWS-partners, in which you can apply the knowledge gained in the regional seminars.
