BIP - Information for lecturers and staff
As teaching staff at THWS, you have the opportunity to engage in a Blended Intensive Programme as part of a course with your students or coordinate a Blended Intensive Programme in collaboration with European partner universities.
BIPs can be integrated into curricula or serve as complementary elements. They might constitute an entirely new programme or an expansion of an existing one, incorporating additional features, such as the method of delivery in a blended format.
As a member of THWS (faculty and administration), you also have the option to participate in a BIP as part of an Erasmus+ Staff Mobility for training and professional development.
Participate in a BIP for training purposes
Some universities organize Staff Weeks for training and professional development purposes for university personnel as Blended Intensive Programmes. Information regarding these can be obtained from the partner institutions hosting the Staff Week.
Members of THWS, as part of an Erasmus+ Staff Mobility for training and professional development, may receive a travel cost subsidy and a stay allowance through Erasmus+.*
Requirements, application processes at HSIN, and further details can be found on our website under Erasmus+ Staff Mobility for Training.
*Erasmus+ mobility grants are subject to the availability of the corresponding THWS budget.
Participate in a BIP for teaching purposes and/or with a group of students
As teaching staff at THWS, you have the opportunity to participate in a Blended Intensive Programme as part of a course with your students or coordinate a Blended Intensive Programme in collaboration with European partner universities.
If you're involved in a BIP as teaching staff without a group of students, you can apply for Erasmus+ funding for staff mobility in teaching through HSIN.
Requirements, the application process at HSIN, and further information are available on our website under Erasmus+ Staff Mobility in Teaching.
If you wish to participate with a group of students in a Blended Intensive Programme coordinated by a THWS partner university, this must be timely registered with HSIN to assess the availability of Erasmus+ funding for all involved well in advance.
The participation in a BIP can be applied for annually by supervising professors through the MoveON Portal at HSIN by January 31 for participation in the following academic year..
Information regarding the application process and comprehensive details about Blended Intensive Programmes and their organization can be found in the Blended Intensive Programmes handbook in the Erasmus+ E-Learning course or can be requested from the international relations officers of your faculty.
Below, we've compiled some of the most important FAQs for your convenience.
Coordinating a BIP
THWS can take on the role of the coordinating institution, leading the organization for a BIP. This means that THWS has access to OS (Organizational Support) funding from Erasmus+ for coordinating the BIP.
For a BIP coordinated by THWS, the in-person week typically takes place at THWS.
The coordination of a BIP can be requested by supervising professors through the MoveON portal at HSIN annually until January 31 for implementation in the subsequent academic year.
Information about the application process and comprehensive details on Blended Intensive Programmes and their organization can be found in the Blended Intensive Programmes guide within the Erasmus+ E-Learning course or can be obtained from the international relations officers of your faculty.

What roles can universities take in implementing a BIP?
All universities involved in a BIP must assume at least one of three roles. Universities must be either the sending institution or the receiving institution. The coordinating institution (only one per BIP) also assumes the role of either a sending or a receiving institution.
Sending Institution is any university that sends learners to participate in the BIP at the partner university abroad, where the BIP is held and the physical mobility takes place. Each sending institution is responsible for Erasmus+ funding from its own budget for its participants. Each BIP has at least two sending institutions.
Receiving Institution is the university where the physical/intensive phase of the BIP occurs, either at the institution itself or in its home country. Each BIP has only one receiving institution. Consequently, multiple mobility phases within a BIP cannot be held at various partner universities.
Coordinating Institution is the university that has requested OS (Organizational Support) funding to conduct the BIP and assumes overall coordination of the BIP. It acts as the receiving institution if the physical phase occurs at its location or in its home country. It acts as the sending institution if the physical phase occurs at another BIP partner. Each BIP has only one coordinating institution.
How can I apply for coordinating my own BIP at THWS or for mobility funding to participate in a BIP?
The application process occurs once a year as part of the Erasmus+ KA131 submissions. HSIN informs the faculty international relations officers at the commencement of a new application round.
Therefore, the application deadline at HSIN is annually on January 31. The application is submitted through the MoveON portal at HSIN and applies to the subsequent academic year.
Within the application, general information about the BIP must be provided (participating institutions, target audience, course content, and the timeframe of the mobility phase - as far as known at the time of application).
If you aim to participate in a BIP as part of an Erasmus+ Staff Mobility without a group of students, you must apply for funding at HSIN via the MoveON portal at least 4 weeks before the start of the mobility. The criteria for a regular Erasmus+ Staff Mobility apply.
When will I be informed whether my BIP can be funded?
HSIN will provide information in February regarding which BIP projects can be considered in the current Erasmus+ KA131 proposal of THWS. The implementation of the BIP is feasible from October of the same year to September of the following year and is contingent upon project approval by the National Agency, NA DAAD, which HSIN will inform about in early summer.
HSIN will communicate the final approval in June.
What deadlines must be observed?
January 31st: Application for a BIP for the following academic year
At least three months before the start of the BIP*: List of participants must be sent to HSIN
*The exact timing may vary depending on the deadlines of the involved partner universities. In cases of BIPs with Outgoing Mobility of THWS participants, the minimum three-month deadline must always be considered. Additionally, for Incoming BIPs, the deadlines of the Student Service must also be observed since BIP participants from partner universities enrolled at THWS are registered as exchange students.
Further deadlines will be communicated by HSIN during the preparation for the BIP (e.g., declaration regarding the use of BIP-OS funds, submission of mobility documents, etc.).
Where can I find out about BIPs that have already been organised with THWS participation?
You can find an overview of all BIPs either conducted or currently in the planning phase with THWS participation on the HSIN website: https://international.thws.de/en/thws-international/internationalizationhome/blended-intensive-programmes/
