Blog entry 4 – About Christmas markets and exams

Tue, 11 Dec 2018 | Unicorn College

The Christmas markets have opened! Yes, not only one but several markets. I don’t know the exact number, but I’ve already been to four different ones here in Prague. The markets are a really big deal here. At any time at day and night, people are flocking to the markets. Basically, they are similar to the ones we know from Germany, though. A lot of stalls offer socks, hats, roasted almonds, Christmas decoration and so on and so forth. However, just the setting is worth a visit. One of the markets is at Old Town Square, where a huge Christmas tree is set up every year. It is surrounded by historical buildings, which creates a unique scenery. Every year, the lights on the tree are turned on in a festive ceremony including a small light show. Of course, I didn’t want to miss it and went there with my roommate. The cutest Christmas market, however, is at Florenc. It is not very big, but there are many tiny heated igloos where you can enjoy a cup of mulled wine. Speaking of mulled wine, I noticed that mulled wine differs from country to country. Here in Prague you get a shot of alcohol (I haven’t been able yet to identify which one but I’m investigating this issue) with some hot water poured over it. It tastes rather interesting. There are also many ice rinks where you can skate. Just rent a pair of skates on the spot and then you’re good to go. Christmas joy is definitely coming up!

When I'm not strolling across one of the markets, I’m either at university or at home. During the next two weeks before Christmas we will have to deal with several exams and essays. After that, it is time to relax. Our exam period will begin in the middle of January. On 18 February, the summer semester will start already because we don’t have any winter holidays here. Somehow it’s a strange feeling that the 3rd semester is already coming to an end. On the other hand, I’m looking forward to another semester at Unicorn College. Since I’ve chosen the double degree programme, I get to stay here for two semesters. In my 4th semester, my friends who also spent their 3rd semester abroad will be back and some have already announced that they will visit me. I’m thrilled to meet them again!

The days till Christmas are numbered. To get the contemplative Advent season started, I bought tickets for a Christmas concert at the National Theatre, which will take place on 23 December. I already decorated my home with many small lights and aromatic candles, which are popular in Germany and in the Czech Republic at Christmas time. Since I’m originally from the Ore Mountains, aromatic candles are a must have for me. This is where I’m going for Christmas and the holidays because Christmas is best at home.

With this in mind, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
