Universität Ljubljana, Slowenien

Hi everyone,

I can’t believe how fast time goes by when you do a semester abroad. It’s been two months and the second half of my adventure has begun. I’ve already discovered some secrets of the ‘small great unknown’, as I called Ljubljana in my first blog entry.

This time, I’m going to tell you about the night life in Ljubljana and about my getaway to Zagreb.

Let me take you back to two month ago. University had just started and there was an Erasmus-party almost every night. It felt like all the clubs and pubs were fighting over us international students. The various pubs, bars and clubs that were all located in the city center could easily be reached by foot. A special feature of Ljubljana’s night life is the Metelcova-quarter which is close to the central station and offers alternative entertainment. It is definitely worth a visit. These parties are a great opportunity to get to know other international students. But after a while there were less parties (which wasn’t the worst thing from a medical point of view) and university got more intensive. When the weather got warmer, club-season shifted into bar-season and students are now lining the banks of the Ljubljanica River. My fellow Slovenian students are promising me a time of live music in the streets and open air events. Now I’m really curious and can’t wait to tell you about it!

A few kilometer to the South there is live music all over the place already. That was my impression when I traveled to Zagreb two weeks ago. After a two-hour ride, my international Erasmus travel-party and I were welcomed with some ‘urban brass’. Due to wet weather conditions we spend our first day in Croatia’s capital inside museums and restaurants, trying some local ‘cuisine’. The next day the sun was shining again, so we decided to discover the city and its 800,000 inhabitants by foot. We witnessed a rather strange representative military parade with traditionally dressed soldiers riding on horses, banging drums and patrolling around the city’s various memorials. Looking back on it I would describe Zagreb as a nice and very green capital worth seeing. This trip made me want to visit further cities of the former region of Yugoslavia. I’m really looking forward to introduce you to some of these cities in the following blog entries.
