Study contents

The seven-semester programme is a full-time programme taught in German. In case of attendance of international students, some lectures might be given in English. The programme contains modules from the fields of law and governance, basics of business administration, communication sciences, media technology, and basics of journalism. It also comprises practical work, project work, and general fundamentals and specialisations.

1: Foundation phase (1st to 4th semester)

The degree programme starts with a three-day team training, in which participants develop interpersonal and soft skills. In the first four semesters, students are concerned with the fundamentals of media sciences, journalism, and commercial fields. Foreign language training is integrated in the programme: English for communication and media. Already in the first semesters the focus is placed on independent and practice-oriented work.

2: Internship semester (5th semester)

The internship is scheduled for the 5th semester. You decide whether you complete the internship at a company in Germany or abroad. During the internship you gain insights into the company’s practices and can apply your skills and abilities in a professional environment.

3: Specialisation phase (6th to 7th semester)

The specialisation phase is scheduled for the 6th and 7th semester. You can pursue your personal interests and decide between journalism, PR, and corporate communication, project and product management, and digital media sales. You also develop skills in company management. Your academic specialisation culminates in a bachelor's thesis on a topic of your choice.

Various specialisations are offered for the bachelor's degree programme Media Management. This offers you the opportunity to choose an individual focus area and already embark on your future career path during your studies. From the 6th semester, you may choose from the following modules:

  • Journalism
  • PR/Corporate communication
  • Managing media companies
  • Any other specialisation offered by the faculty, e.g. marketing and sales, HR management, finance

Students can also choose from our general elective modules (AWPM). These enable you to specialise further.

Practice-orientation

Studies at THWS are characterised by a high degree of practice-orientation and the internship semester. Depending on the chosen degree programme, the internship semester is scheduled for the 5th or 6th semester. The internship semester offers you the chance to complete an internship with a company of your choice and gain insights into the professional world. That way you can apply the theoretical and practical knowledge developed during your studies in the work environment you are most interested in.

Requirement for admission to the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt is a valid general higher education entrance qualification (Abitur), a subject-specific higher education entrance qualification (fachgebundene Hochschulreife), an advanced technical college certificate (Fachhochschulreife), a general/subject-specific entrance qualification for qualified professionals, or a comparable qualification from abroad (HZB, university entrance qualification).
