Your studies for a greener tomorrow – Sustainable Energy Systems at THWS

Are you ready to drive the transition towards sustainable energies? Supplying reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy is among the most pressing issues of our society. In solving these issues, the focus is on the use of different energy sources and storage technologies, which must be systemically integrated, as well as on the creation of sector coupling between different energy networks (electricity, gas, and heat). This exciting task must be carried out by engineers, who need a comprehensive education that combines technical knowledge with expertise in the fields of economics, law, and the natural sciences. Start your career where the future is shaped – at THWS!

Reasons to study Sustainable Energy Systems at THWS

Studying at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt opens up doors to a world of innovations and technical challenges. We connect important theory with the required practice, fundamental research with applied engineering, and regional expertise with global perspective. At THWS, you learn to gain new perspectives and contribute to a more sustainable and technologically advanced future. During your studies you can attain to additional qualifications (e.g. trainer certificate (Ausbilderschein), language courses).

Advantages of the degree programme:

  • Interdisciplinary education with a focus on technology, economy, and law
  • Practice-oriented studies and direct cooperations with industry
  • State-of-the-art labs and study environments

Study contents

1: Foundation phase (1st to 2nd semester)

In the foundation phase of the bachelor's degree programme Sustainable Energy Systems at THWS, you will build the essential foundations. You will start with core modules such as Mathematics, Physics, and the Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering, which are essential for understanding complex energy systems. This technical foundation is complemented by introductions to business administration for engineers and the chemistry of sustainable energy systems. This broad basis prepares you for the specific challenges in the energy sector.

2: Specialisation phase (3rd to 5th semester)

In the specialisation phase, you deepen your knowledge in specific fields like energy-technical systems, energy management, and energy and environmental law. Through our electives you can tailor your studies according to your interests. Projects and lab courses offer you the opportunity to apply your knowledge in practice and gain valuable hands-on experience.

3: Internship semester (6th semester)

The 6th semester focuses on the practical application of the knowledge and skills you have developed thus far. During the internship semester, you will work in a company or research institutions and apply your academic knowledge to real-life problems. This is an excellent opportunity to establish professional networks and gain insights into potential fields of work.

4: Final semester (7th semester)

In the 7th and final semester of your degree programme, the focus is on your bachelor's thesis. For your thesis, you conduct in-depth research into a specific topic that is of particular interest to you. You will be closely supervised to ensure that your work is both scientifically sound and relevant to practice. Upon successful graduation, you will be ideally equipped to start your career as a specialist in the field of sustainable energy technologies.

We do not offer specific specialisations in the degree programme Sustainable Energy Systems. However, you can choose a specialisation area by taking elective modules offered by the three faculties involved. They offer modules in the subject areas of drives, battery systems, energy management, foundations, high-voltage technology, life cycle analyses, power electronics, measurement technology, simulation, and heating networks.

Students can also choose from our general elective modules (AWPM). These enable you to specialise further.

Practice-orientation

Studies at THWS are characterised by a high degree of practice-orientation and the internship semester. Depending on the chosen degree programme, the internship semester is scheduled for the 5th or 6th semester. The internship semester offers you the chance to complete an internship with a company of your choice and gain insights into the professional world. That way you can apply the theoretical and practical knowledge developed during your studies in the work environment you are most interested in.

  • Exercise courses and practice projects
  • Getting to know and applying new technologies
  • Internship semester as an integral part of studies
  • Professors with extensive experience in the industry and economy
  • Cooperation with companies and industry partners, also internationally
  • Possibility of completing your final thesis in cooperation with a company

By the way: You also have the opportunity to complete your internship semester abroad. That way, you do not only develop intercultural competence but also boost your language skills and your career perspectives on the international job market.
