The bachelor's degree programme Business Information Systems at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt offers an extensive education that combines technical competences and economic know-how. During your studies, you will develop knowledge and skills that enable you to understand, create, and manage IT systems. You will be optimally prepared to work at a company's interface of technology and economy. The degree programme combines knowledge and skills in computer science with in-depth knowledge of business processes. Thus, you will be able to effectively solve complex problems and contribute to the digital transformation.
Programme structure
Foundation phase (1st to 4th semester)
The focus of the first four semesters is placed on the fundamentals of computer science and business administration. The modules include Programming, Databases, Business Software, Business Technologies, and basic concepts of business administration and economics. In this phase, students also develop essential mathematical and statistical knowledge and skills.
Internship semester (5th semester)
The 5th semester focuses on the practical application of the knowledge and skills you have developed. During the internship semester, which takes between 20 to 26 weeks, you work in a company and apply your knowledge in real-world projects. This experience is essential for grasping the practical importance of the theoretical contents, and for making valuable professional contacts.
Specialisation phase (6th to 7th semester)
After the internship, you will have the opportunity to specialise according to your interests and learn about the latest trends and technologies in IT and economy. Also, this phase is ideal for a semester abroad, which facilitates international exchange and global learning, and helps you gain new perspectives. A research project completed in groups promotes problem-solving skills and students’ ability to work in a team.
Final semester (7th semester)
The degree programme is concluded by the bachelor's thesis, which is often completed in cooperation with a company. The thesis provides you with the opportunity to scrutinise a specific problem and develop practice-oriented solutions that take into account technical and economic aspects alike.
Elective modules
In the 6th and 7th semester, students can choose from different core elective modules (FWPM) according to their personal interests. In the 6th semester, you choose four FWPMs and in the 7th semester three FWPMs. These electives enable you to specialise in fields like IT security, business software, cloud computing, business analytics, or mobile applications. The offer of FWPMs is constantly adapted to current trends. These courses are frequently taught by experts from industry and economy to ensure the practical relevance.
Students can also choose from our general elective modules (AWPM). These enable you to specialise further.
Practice-orientation
Studies at THWS are characterised by a high degree of practice-orientation and the internship semester. Depending on the chosen degree programme, the internship semester is scheduled for the 5th or 6th semester. The internship semester offers you the chance to complete an internship with a company of your choice and gain insights into the professional world. That way you can apply the theoretical and practical knowledge developed during your studies in the work environment you are most interested in.

Requirement for admission to the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt is a valid general higher education entrance qualification (Abitur), a subject-specific higher education entrance qualification (fachgebundene Hochschulreife), an advanced technical college certificate (Fachhochschulreife), a general/subject-specific entrance qualification for qualified professionals, or a comparable qualification from abroad (HZB, university entrance qualification).
