Study contents
The bachelor's degree programme Information Security at THWS is aimed at preparing students for the challenging tasks in the field of cyber security. Here, we provide you with a detailed overview of the different phases of the programme that are interconnected and are completed by the bachelor's thesis.
Programme structure
Foundation phase (1st to 2nd semester)
First, students learn the basics of information security. These include the introduction to the principles of IT security, network technologies, and the understanding of network architectures, protocols, and security measures. Students attend foundation modules on programming languages relevant for security applications. You will also brush up on mathematical basics. Finally, you will gain important insights into the legal framework in relation to data protection and cybercrime.
Specialisation phase (3rd to 4th semester)
Now we're talking! For example in the module Penetration Testing: You will learn how to identify and document security holes in systems and networks. Additionally, you will develop profound knowledge and skills in the field of security management. Our elective modules offer you the opportunity to specialise in different fields.
Internship semester (5th semester)
The mandatory internship semester is scheduled for the 5th semester. You choose a company at which you put your knowledge to the test. You will work on real-life projects in the company and thus gain first professional experience. In addition, you attend the accompanying seminars and reflect upon your practical experience to deepen your theoretical knowledge.
Final phase (6th to 7th semester)
In the 6th semester, more exciting modules like Digital Forensics await. In the 7th and final semester, you write your bachelor's thesis focussing on a topic of your choice. At THWS, you can also choose to conduct your research work on a current topic of information security in cooperation with a company or a research institute.

In the bachelor's degree programme Information Security (B.A.), we do not offer specific specialisations or specialisation modules. However, we do offer students in the higher semesters the opportunity to choose from our wide range of elective modules. They differ in the summer and winter semester.

Practice-orientation
Studies at THWS are characterised by a high degree of practice-orientation and the internship semester. Depending on the chosen degree programme, the internship semester is scheduled for the 5th or 6th semester. The internship semester offers you the chance to complete an internship with a company of your choice and gain insights into the professional world. That way you can apply the theoretical and practical knowledge developed during your studies in the work environment you are most interested in.

Admission requirements
Requirement for admission to the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt is a valid general higher education entrance qualification (Abitur), a subject-specific higher education entrance qualification (fachgebundene Hochschulreife), an advanced technical college certificate (Fachhochschulreife), a general/subject-specific entrance qualification for qualified professionals, or a comparable qualification from abroad (HZB, university entrance qualification).
