Study contents

The master's degree programme Geo Data Technology takes three semesters. The programme offers you flexibility and a strong research-orientation. You learn how to analyse and process spatial data. In the foundation studies, you will be concerned with methods of geo data processing, automation, and artificial intelligence. In the 3rd semester, machine learning, computer vision, and land management are part of the curriculum. You will build knowledge in online lectures and projects. You will write your master's thesis within the frame of a research project.

Foundation phase (1st and 2nd semester)

In the first year of study, you will be concerned with methods of geo data processing, automated analysis, and artificial intelligence in geoinformatics. The focus is placed on machine learning, computer vision, and the automation of geo data processes. The theoretical contents are complemented by interactive seminars and project-based exercises that prepare students for real-world issues. Already during this phase, you are closely involved in current research projects at THWS.

In the 2nd semester, you will dive into methods of geo data analysis, AI-based modeling, and geo data sources. You will also learn how to process and visualise data in different fields like environmental monitoring, land management, or urban planning. In addition to technical know-how, you will build soft skills like academic work, interdisciplinary project work, and entrepreneurial thinking. We guarantee practice-orientation through our online seminars, project work and direct exchange with researchers and lecturers.

Due to the possibility of starting studies in the summer or winter semester, the order of the first two semesters might be reversed. That is why the module contents are conceptualised on a stand-alone basis.

Master's thesis (3rd semester)

The 3rd semester is dedicated to the master's thesis. You work on a current research question from geo data analysis, environmental protection and disaster prevention, smart cities, or data science. In this, you can contribute to ongoing research projects at THWS or come up with your own practice-oriented topic. By focussing on innovative applications and research-oriented tasks, you can prove your expertise and tailor your individual profile for a career in industry, administration, or science.

In the course of the master's degree programme Geo Data Technology, you will develop extensive competences in processing and analysing spatial data. Your studies combine current technologies like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computer vision with practice-oriented applications in environmental monitoring, land management, and smart cities. That way, you develop specialist knowledge and skills opening up diverse professional fields.

Your degree programme covers the following topics, among others:

  • Automation of geo data processing
  • Geo data availability and quality
  • Computer vision and digitalisation
  • Machine learning for geo data
  • Artificial intelligence (AI) with geo data
  • Broad applications, e.g. in industry, environmental protection and disaster management
  • Evaluating climatological developments using geo data
  • Development of rural areas, e.g. In economy, environmental protection, ecology, and tourism
  • Virtual and augmented reality
  • International projects in health protection and development aid with geo information systems and drone surveying

How are studies at THWS particularly practice-oriented?

  • Project seminars are directly connected to research projects
  • Getting to know and applying new technologies
  • Lecturers with a solid background in industry, economy, and administration
  • Cooperation with companies and industry partners, also internationally
  • Opportunity to write the final thesis in cooperation with companies and administrations

Career and perspectives

As a geodata expert, you analyse and visualise spatial data to enable sound decisions in fields like environmental monitoring, urban planning, and disaster prevention. You develop automated geodata processing methods and contribute to visualising complex links. Your expert knowledge plays a key role in creating sustainable living spaces, protecting natural resources, and developing innovative solutions to societal issues. By applying current technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning, you make a significant contribution to digital transformation in economy, administration, and science.

The various professional fields include:

  • Geoinformation
  • Environmental protection and conservation (authorities, planning firms)
  • Forest management and geological authorities
  • (Geo) data management and process optimisation in companies
  • Geobase data production with regional surveying authorities
  • Engineering and industrial surveying
  • Mechanical engineering, e.g. in the automotive industry
  • Land management for developing vital regions and cities (smart region, smart city)
  • Surveying
  • Rural development
  • Soil management
  • E-commerce
