Three good reasons
Study contents
In the three-semester master's degree programme Product Development and Systems Design (M.Eng.), you will develop profound engineering knowledge enabling you to design complex technical systems. In the foundation phase, you build theoretical and methodological foundations in the fields of simulation, optimisation, and product life cycle management. The main studies are characterised by practice-oriented projects, elective modules, and interdisciplinary cooperation. The modules are offered as lectures, practical courses, and practical courses in state-of-the-art labs. A cooperation project with the industry and the master's thesis in the 3rd semester complete your studies.
Programme structure
1: Main studies (1st and 2nd semester)
In the first two semesters, you build profound engineering fundamentals in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, and applied polymer engineering. Students learn how to apply advanced simulation and optimisation methods, how to develop complex technical systems, and how to include economic and legal aspects in the product development process. You also deepen your knowledge and skills in application-oriented modules like CAE-applications, new materials, and mechatronic systems. Practice-oriented labs, field trips, and talks by experts render our programme particularly close to practice.
2: Cooperation project (1st and 2nd semester, accompanying your studies)
During their studies, students apply their knowledge in a cooperation project with companies or research institutions. They work on real development tasks, apply scientific methods, and hone their project management and leadership skills. Working in interdisciplinary teams specifically prepares them for complex engineering tasks in industry.
3: Final phase (3rd semester)
The degree programme concludes with the master's thesis, in which students work independently on a current research or development issue - often in cooperation with companies. The aim is to develop innovative product and system solutions focussing on sustainability, efficiency, and technological progress. Scientific methods and practical applications are combined to develop forward-looking solutions.
Specialisations
The master's programme Product Development and Systems Design offers you the opportunity to deepen your knowledge and specialise in future-oriented technologies. Depending on your interests, you will choose a specialisation in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, applied polymer engineering and build in-depth knowledge in the development of innovative products and systems. This will optimally prepare you for challenging tasks in research, development and industry.
You can choose from these specialisations:
- Mechanical Engineering Develop mechanical systems and parts
- Mechatronics (German): Combine mechanical, electronic, and information technology systems
- Plastics and Rubber Engineering: Materials science and sustainable materials processing
What makes studies at THWS so practice-oriented?
- Exercise courses and practice projects
- Getting to know and applying new technologies
- Professors with a solid background in industry and economy
- Cooperation with companies and industry partners, regionally and internationally
- Opportunity of writing your final thesis in cooperation with a company
