Mechatronics
Bachelor of Engineering

The study programme Mechatronics is devised to meet the multidisciplinary requirements of today’s industry. This engineering discipline combines the expertise from areas of electrical and mechanical engineering with information processing.

In addition to delivering a solid understanding of these areas, this programme aims to develop further skills needed to carry out and manage engineering projects.

Carrer Perspectives

Mechatronics is a multidisciplinary field of engineering. Mechatronics engineers can perform on a wide variety of jobs such as research and development; hardware and software design; product development; planning, execution and management of engineering projects; installation, testing and commissioning of industrial equipment; quality control; marketing; customer care and consulting. The career opportunities are very bright. Potential employers are companies from various industrial sectors like automotive, aerospace, robotics, manufacturing, material processing, energy systems, drives, printing, medical systems and consumer products etc. Their multidisciplinary competencies enable them to assume coordination and leading jobs in project teams involving engineers of other disciplines like electrical, mechanical and software engineering. The study programme at FHWS is highly practical. The interaction of students with the industry, during the internship and the bachelor thesis, normally paves the path to a fascinating career in a national or multinational enterprise.

Programme Structure

A six-week long pre-study internship is a requirement of this Bachelor programme. The whole coursework of the programme can be divided into three stages. At the first stage, consisting of three semesters, basic and foundation modules are offered. The emphasis is on the fundamentals of engineering, mathematics, computing, natural sciences and soft skills. The second stage of the programme, consisting of fourth and fifth semesters, deals with core modules of mechatronics. The theory and lab courses, offered at this stage, involve control systems, measuring techniques, actuators, software engineering, embedded systems, design & simulation of mechatronic systems etc. A wide range of elective modules with direct industrial relevance to automation, robotics, manufacturing, power engineering and automotive sectors is also offered in the fifth semester. The final stage of the study programme, consisting of sixth and seventh semesters, involves practical training with real-world problems. The major part of the sixth semester is an internship in industry.
